Qualifications Changing Face of Recruitment

The REC has been conducting a series of consultation workshops as part of its ongoing review of the industry’s official qualifications.

As well as providing practical feedback from recruiters on current accreditation procedures, the workshops have flagged up some of the major changes in the recruitment landscape over recent years that will need to be reflected in the revised training and qualifications programme.

30 Leading UK Job Boards

Employee Motivation During the World Cup

Nine out of ten employers have no plans in place to help manage staff absence during the forthcoming World Cup, according to a poll by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

The poll of more than 1,000 employers shows that almost all (90%) of organisations have not developed a policy to manage staff absence during the World Cup. Just 5% of organisations have developed a policy while a further 5% are currently developing one.

Increase in Business Support Headcount

Over half of employers will keep their permanent hiring of business support professionals at the same level and 39% will increase headcount during 2009. That’s according to the 2009 market report and salary survey just released by secretarial and business support recruiter Crone Corkill.

The latest figures from IDSPay.co.uk show that the median pay settlement level is 2%, covering the three months to the end of January 2010. Our first detailed look at the January pay round indicates that in many ways, the picture so far is similar to the overall outturn for last year. While pay freezes are still part of the picture, increases continue to be paid too.

Growth of staff appointments remained strong in April despite easing.

Changes in the Market Place and Stronger Signs of Recovery

In a recession, the first people to go are the support staff. Administrators, IT and customer service representatives all feel the impact as employers begin the cost cutting that is crucial to their ability to survive.

It is not all doom and gloom, although for those desperately trying to find employment it may seem so. There were some encouraging pointers to changes in the market place and stronger signs of recovery in the latest monthly Report on Jobs by KPMG and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).

Financial Recruitment in City Reaches 18-Month High

City recruitment has recovered to levels not seen since the collapse of Lehman Brothers 18 months ago. There is some sentiment that recruitment levels could reach pre-credit crisis levels within months and financial firm Morgan McKinley reports that the average City salary rose by eight percent to 55,689 pounds in March compared with February. The recovery in City recruitment is not expected to be mirrored in the overall UK jobs market however, and there is concern that public sector job cuts over the next 18 months could hinder the economic recovery.

Long Term Outlook Positive for UK Jobs

A survey of 200 employers by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) showed that nine out of 10 expected their workforces to remain static or grow in the next year.

The research was published ahead of eagerly-awaited new unemployment figures which will show how quickly the economy is recovering from the recession.

Roger Tweedy, the REC's director of research, said: "Businesses remain cautious in the face of political and economic uncertainty ahead of the general election.
